PERFORMED THE FINAL STAGE “STUDENT ENERGY CHALLENGE” INTELLECTUAL TEAM CONTEST

On October 2, 8 teams that passed the final stage of “Student Energy Challenge” contest presented their project works to the jury. The purpose of the competition held by Shell Kazakhstan and KAZENERGY Association is to attract teams from technical educational institutions of Kazakhstan to the development of innovative projects that can potentially provide solutions to energy problems. The competition was attended by the guest of honor - U. S. Karabalin, Deputy Chairman of the KAZENERGY Association, who spoke with parting words for the teams.

Commenting on the competition, Mr. Olivier Lazar, Chairman of Shell concern in Kazakhstan noted: “We hold “Student Energy Challenge” contest for the second year in a row, and consider it a necessary platform for the disclosure of the potential of students, interaction and exchange of experience with the expert community. All participants will be given the opportunity to undergo training, which was developed by experts of Shell group in order to develop critical thinking skills and integrated problem solving, which will certainly help young professionals in the implementation of their projects”.

Uzakbay Karabalin, Deputy Chairman of the KAZENERGY Association added: “Student Energy Challenge” contest – is an opportunity for students to express themselves in the ability to find like-minded people, to unite in a project team, to work together and to show the first skills of professionalism. We believe that participation in such events provides an additional incentive for our young people to new discoveries and achievements”.

During 7 months 8 student teams successfully passed several stages of selection from Atyrau, Uralsk, Aktau, Almaty and Ekibastuz, worked on projects, and during the final defense each team tried to prove that their work is the most worthy and has the potential for further development.

The finalist teams were identified on the basis of evaluation of written works on certain criteria and protection of projects during the contest. We are grateful for the active work of the members of the jury – K. M. Kabyldin, Deputy General Director for relations with authorities of Caspian Pipeline Consortium JSC, B. Hazelaar, General Director of the Shell Kazakhstan company, H. Xing, Project Manager for renewable energy of Shell Kazakhstan, L.A. Myltykbayev, Managing Director – Director of forensics Department of Fund of science JSC, B. K. Isenov, Director of Generation and Fuel under Samruk-Energo JSC.

Following the result of the presentation of the project works, the finalist teams were:
  • “Association of Innovators” team (students of Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications with the project: “Application of resource-saving systems at large commercial facilities”);
  • KBTU United team (students of the Kazakh-British Technical University with the project “Energy production from waste. The generation of energy from urban sewage”);
  • NU SynGas team (students of Nazarbayev University with the project: “Gasification of solid waste”);
  • Quadra team (students of Nazarbayev University with the project: “Network load forecasting using machine learning technologies”);

Tomorrow, October 3, 2018 (from 11:30 to 12:10) in the Kashagan hall of the Hilton-Astana hotel, the finalist teams will present their project works in the style of elevator pitch and prizes will be distributed between them.

The winners of the contest will receive prizes from Shell Kazakhstan 10,000 USD – for 1st place, 5,000 USD – for 2nd place and 3,000 USD – for 3rd place.

At the end of the competition on October 4-5, 2018, “Nxplorers” two-day training will be organized for all 8 teams. The training program was developed by Shell and combines approaches of system thinking, scenario planning and theory of changes.

All participants of the stage were awarded with certificates of participation and souvenirs.
