KAZENERGY Association participates in the 9th Session of IRENA Assembly  and in the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi (UAE)

Representatives of KAZENERGY Association participated in the 9th Session of IRENA Assembly (International Renewable Energy Agency) that took place in Abu Dhabi (UAE) on January 10-13, 2019.

The Assembly is the highest decision-making body of the Agency and unites the heads of states, ministers, government officials and representatives of private sector, civil society and other international organizations for discussion of renewable energy global agenda and taking concrete measures to accelerate the global energy transition.

On a regular basis KAZENERGY Association takes an active part in the work of the Assembly and a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation was signed between IRENA and KAZENERGY Association in 2015.

During the current work of the Assembly, Talgat Karashev, the Executive Director of KAZENERGY Association held a series of meetings with the representative of the IRENA Secretariat, Gurbuz Gonul, Executive Director, Steve Sawyer, Senior Political Advisor of Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), and David Videpoul, Managing Director for International Cooperation of the German Solar Energy Association.

Cooperation issues and organization of joint events within the framework of the Kazakhstani Energy Week and the XII KAZENERGY Eurasian Forum that will take place on September 25-27, 2019 in Astana were discussed during the meetings.

Appointment of new IRENA Director-General took place at the end of the 9th Session of the Assembly, Francesco La Camera was selected for this position. Mr. La Kamera will take office on April 4, 2019 succeeding Mr. Adnan Amin who has been IRENA Director-General since 2011.

In addition, the World Future Energy Summit takes place in Abu Dhabi on January 14-17.

WFES-2019 serves as a platform where governments, corporations, entrepreneurs, and investors can share knowledge and experience for solving the world's growing energy challenges. A total of 850 delegates from 170 countries are expected to attend the Summit.

In addition, within the framework of WFES-2019 key events, KAZENERGY Association took part in Kazakhstani session “Development of the renewable energy sector in Kazakhstan” on January 14 this year. This event was organized by the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan and UNDP in Kazakhstan with the support of IRENA International Agency and KAZENERGY Association.

The session was held at a high level with participation of Sungat Yesimkhanov, Vice-Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Gurbuz Gonul, IRENA Executive Director who made a welcoming speech and outlined the relevance of renewable energy development in global energy sector instability conditions. Among the honored guests, the event was attended by Mr. Olafur Grimsson, former President of Iceland (1996-2016), the Chairman of the Arctic Circle.

In addition, presentations and reports were made by the heads of departments and organizations about renewable energy issues such as EBRD, UNDP, RFC, Solar Energy Associations (SPAQ), Shell, and others.
In turn, the speakers described the situation of renewable energy sources development in Kazakhstan and the measures taken by the state to attract potential investors and partners for development of this energy sector.

The event was attended by over 20 foreign companies interested in investing in Kazakhstan.
Also, within the framework of the Summit business events the Executive Director of KAZENERGY Association met with the representatives of Masdar headed by General Manager Ahmed Al-Awadi. During the meeting the representatives of KAZENERGY and Masdar discussed the issues of expanding bilateral cooperation and participation in the XII KAZENERGY Eurasian Forum this year.
