Oil and gas companies shared their experience in the development of renewable energy in Kazakhstan at the site of KAZENERGY Association

On June 27, 2019, a roundtable themed “Experience of oil and gas companies in the development of renewable energy in Kazakhstan” was held with the participation of international experts, representatives of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, United Nations Development Programme, USAID and stakeholders of the Association.

In the framework of this roundtable, the participants got acquainted with the situation of the development of Renewable Energy Sources (hereinafter – RES) in the oil and gas sector. Many big players of the oil and gas sector currently invest in RES in Kazakhstan. Eni has a wind project “Badamsha” in the Aktobe region; Shell representatives shared their plans to invest in “pure” energy in Kazakhstan. This is done not only for the purpose of diversification, but because of purely practical considerations – technologies in the field of RES continue to improve and become cheaper.

Such global phenomena as the rapid improvement of technology is an important factor. The number of producers and suppliers grows annually, the competition between them increases, which makes renewable energy more attractive for investments.

The roundtable participants support the governmental initiatives on the improvement of the investment climate in the field of legislation for renewable energy projects in Kazakhstan. According to experts, the development of the sector will facilitate creation of a multiplicative effect for the country’s economy.

In its turn, NCOC presented mechanisms for reducing the carbon footprint, which include the use of energy efficient technology to reduce fuel and energy resources for their own needs.
At the end of the meeting, the participants expressed their hope for further fruitful cooperation in the experience exchange in the field of the development of renewable energy sector.
