On the official launch of the pilot solar pv system at Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Аktau

6 September 2019, the first days of a new school year have seen official launch of the pilot solar station in Aktau Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Chemistry and Biology. The ceremony was attended by Serikbay U. Trumov Akim of Mangistau Oblast, Kulyash N. Shamshidinova Chair Autonomous Educational Organization “Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools” and representatives of Shell Kazakhstan.

The solar station project was implemented by Shell Kazakhstan B.V. under the Solar for Schools Program with support from Akimat of Mangistau Oblast, RoK Ministry for Energy and AEO “Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools”. The solar PV system will cover up to 30% of the school annual power consumption and export any surplus power generated by the system to the municipal grid allowing to achieve significant savings on electricity consumption.

The project also indents to encourage and promote STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) education amongst the younger generation and raise awareness about the benefits and new opportunities of renewable energy under the Shell’s flagship renewable energy programme (Shell Nxplorers), which is based on new ways of thinking.

The first school to benefit from this project was the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics in Nur-Sultan. Here Shell Kazakhstan installed specialized carports equipped with solar PV panels. Nursultan Nazarbayev First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan attended the official opening ceremony on 1 December 2018 as a part of festivities on the occasion of 10th anniversary of the Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools. In 2019-2020 Shell Kazakhstan plans to install solar stations in NIS schools in Uralsk, Almaty and Atyrau.

Post the formal ceremony, representatives from the participating organizations recognized the contribution this initiative would make to the Republic’s efforts in transition to a green economy.

Serikbay Trumov Akim of Mangistau Oblast highlighted: “This project is essential for the entire oblast. It will become a platform to further develop small-scale power generation projects in the region and thus will support efforts of the Republic of Kazkahstan in achieving targets in the area of renewables development.”

Kulyash Shamshidinova Chair Board of AEO Nazarbayev Intellectual School noted: “The Solar for Scholl Project that has been implemented at the Intellectual Schools for two years now is at the forefront of our priorities. This successful project is used to promote STEM-education, and most importantly, to foster responsible attitude towards the nature and environmental consciousness. Today the solar PV systems help us reduce energy consumption of schools by almost one quarter, and these quite convincing figures do prove importance of the green economy on a global scale”.

Aidan Murphy GM Commercial Shell Kazakhstan noted: “Shell is a long-term partner of Kazakhstan in energy projects. Today we are putting all our efforts to help Kazakhstan transit to a green economy. We keep looking for new ideas in education and develop projects to roll out “green energy” in Kazakhstan. The Solar for Schools project promotes potential of medium and small businesses through enhancing competencies of local companies in the area of renewable sources of energy”.
