"The New Map: Energy, Climate, and the Clash of Nations".
Daniel Yergin, Pulitzer Prize Winner, Presented his New Book on the KAZENERGY Platform

Jacket_The_New_Map@.jpgOn November 10, 2020, an online presentation of Daniel Yergin's book "The New Map: Energy, Climate, and the Clash of Nations" was held.

This event was held jointly, with the cooperation and support of the KAZENERGY Association and IHS Markit.
In a new book, Pulitzer Prize Winner Daniel Yergin shares his view on energy at the epicenter of political tension and the ordeal associated with COVID-19. The New Map sheds light on the hidden driving forces that have a powerful impact on the global situation in 2020. The aspects that the author considers in his work will have a significant impact on shaping the global economics and politics in the coming years.

In his speech, Daniel Yergin warmly congratulated KAZENERGY on its 15th anniversary and noted the fruitful work and important role of the Association in promoting and developing the oil and gas sector in Kazakhstan.
Bolat Akchulakov, Director General of the KAZENERGY, on behalf of the Association thanked IHS Markit and Daniel Yergin personally for the opportunity to host the event. He stressed that Mr. Yergin is a recognized expert in energy, international politics and economics. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his book "Mining: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money, & Power", which became a world bestseller and has been translated into 17 languages.

"We appreciate that we were among the first to receive your new book. It is especially important in today's difficult time", Akchulakov said. "Cooperation between IHS Markit and KAZENERGY has already included many events. National energy reports issued by the KAZENERGY Association have become an important tool for industry experts to understand the current situation and prospects for the development of the energy sector in Kazakhstan and the world. We hope that our further work will bring new dividends to organizations and our member companies of the Association and will contribute to the development of expert evaluation in Kazakhstan."
Daniel Yergin introduced the audience to the main idea and content of his book, which reflects the current situation in the world and in the energy sector, in particular. In the author's opinion, fundamental changes are currently taking place in the energy sector, climate conditions, and the geopolitical situation, which create a "New Map" of the world. Mr. Yergin noted the special importance of the world's entry into a new era of development associated with the adoption of the Paris Climate Agreement.
Separately, the author focused the participants' attention on the role of Kazakhstan in ensuring energy security, the importance of ensuring the supply of energy resources.

The presentation was attended by experts and representatives of the Kazakhstan oil and gas sector.

Summary:
Daniel Yergin is a recognized authority on energy, international politics and economics. Pulitzer Prize-winning author "The Prize: the Epic Quest for Oil, Money, and Power", "The Quest: Energy, Security, and the Remaking of the Modern World" and "Shattered Peace: The Origins of the Cold War". Co-author of the book "Commanding Heights: The Battle for the World Economy". Vice-Chairman of IHS Markit (one of the leading information and analytical companies)

"NEW MAP" tells:
  • How in the twenty-first century the United States experienced a revolution in energy – the shale revolution –that changed the country's position on the world stage. The United States overtook Russia and Saudi Arabia to become the world leader in oil and gas production, which has led to dramatic shifts in the global energy markets and to the transformation of global geopolitics. How exactly did this happen? And how did the coronavirus then plunge the shale industry into crisis (and will it be able to recover from it)?
  • How climate concerns change the energy map and how the much-discussed "energy transition" from fossil fuels to renewable sources (as opposed to current expectations) can actually take place.
  • How the coronavirus has changed the energy markets and the future roles of the "Big Three" - the USA, Saudi Arabia, and Russia - which now dominates the oil world.
  • How and why new cold wars are breaking out between the United States on the one hand and Russia and China on the other, what role energy plays in them – and what this means for countries caught "between two fires".
  • How rapidly (and dangerously) the relationship between the USA and China is changing – from "cooperation" to "strategic rivalry" - and why energy is one of the keys to understanding this development.
  • How unstable the situation is in the Middle East, which currently provides a third of the world's oil and a significant share of natural gas.
  • How the revolution associated with new models of transportation challenges the familiar, century-old "ecosystem" of oil use in transport.

The new work of Daniel Yergin provides answers not only to the above, but also to many other questions. This is a must-read book for understanding our increasingly complex world, and an essential roadmap for the future.
